About EKU-SAFE Independent Study & Internship Opportunities

EKU-SAFE provides an opportunity for applied learning and scholarship within a student's area of study. Independent studies and internships assist in cultivating the skills and theories students have developed in their academic coursework to apply toward the work of violence prevention. In collaboration with the EKU-SAFE Program Coordinator, the EKU Office of Cooperative Education and Internships, and the faculty advisor, the student plays an active role in creating the area(s) of concentration to focus on for the duration of their time with EKU-SAFE.

Examples of Independent Studies & Internships

  • Design promotional materials
  • Assist with collection and analysis of data

  • Assist in research and review of vulnerable populations to violence
  • Collaborate with community partners for events, promotion, and awareness campaigns
  • Assist EKU-SAFE Task Forces and Violence Prevention Coalition meet goals and implement strategies to help reduce violence
  • Assist in research and review of best practices in violence prevention among college campuses
  • Research proposed and current legislature that offers protection and services for survivors of violence

Expectations for Students

  • Students must demonstrate a commitment to learning the intersection of gender, race, economic status, sexual orientation, and other significant aspects of individual or cultural identity in regard to how it applies to violence prevention.
  • Students must possess strong organizational and writing skills; ability to maintain confidentiality and act with discretion, sensitivity, and neutrality; ability to work in collaborative environment as well as work autonomously; and ability to speak in front of groups to provide training.
  • Students must represent EKU-SAFE and the University in an appropriate and professional manner.
  • The successful student will become familiar with campus and community resources for students in need, will stay current on college violence prevention issues, and model and lead the goals of EKU-SAFE and expectations of personal and collective responsibility for each other's safety.

Guidelines for EKU-SAFE Independent Studies & Internships

  • Independent Studies: Students should speak with their advisor in their respective program of study to learn more about the qualifications and requirements to be considered for an independent study.
  • Internships: Students interested in applying for internships should refer to the EKU Office of Cooperative Education & Internships.

Acclimation to EKU-SAFE

EKU-SAFE is committed to ensuring the success of any student within our program. Each student will work closely with the Program Coordinator and be assigned an EKU-SAFE Peer Educator mentor. Students will receive a copy of the EKU-SAFE handbook, and experience on-site training.
